The Difference Between Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is like an insurance policy that provides benefits to disabled individuals who have worked and paid into the Social Security Administration through FICA taxes. In order to meet the technical qualifications for this program you must have enough work credits on your file, which were earned while you were working. A general rule of thumb for this qualification is that you must have worked full-time for at least five of the last 10 years, but the exact determining of these credits can be more complex.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a federal income supplement program. SSI pays benefits to disabled individuals who have limited income and resources. SSI focuses on a disabled person’s financial need for qualification, and there are strict limits to the means an applicant can have.

While the above paragraphs explain the main differences between these two programs, there are other technical requirements for both programs. Our Social Security Disability Team is extremely knowledgeable on these programs, and knows exactly what is needed for a person to qualify for benefits. Do not read these general explanations and determine on your own that you do not qualify. Our team offers a FREE SSD CASE ANALYSIS to every person that calls our Firm, and will determine in MINUTES if you may qualify for benefits. Trust an expert, don’t count yourself out.

How Do I Qualify For Benefits?

If a person meets the general requirements for one or both of these programs, they then have to prove that they have been or expect to be out of work for at least 12 months, or making less than what the SSA calls Substantial Gainful Activity due to a medical disability.

Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) is a dollar amount set annually by the Social Security Administration. The SSA believes that if a person is able to earn an income at or above SGA, then they do not need Social Security Disability benefits in order to maintain their lifestyle. What amount is considered SGA depends on the nature of a person’s disability. A blind individual, for example, has a higher SGA limit than a non-blind individual. For 2024, the monthly SGA for non-blind individuals is $1550 a month, and $2590 for statutorily blind individuals.

For both SSDI and SSI you must meet certain medical requirements, which the SSA defines as a medical condition that is expected to last one year or longer or result in death. Medical records play a huge part in proving a disability to the Social Security Administration, and are vital to a case’s success.

As you can see from the above, there are many puzzle pieces that have to come together exactly in order for a person to be awarded Social Security Disability benefits. At Nyman Turkish, we work to take the burden of gathering and presenting these pieces off of the shoulders of our clients.
