Nationwide Firm for Clients Pursuing Social Security Disability Benefits
Nyman Turkish PC is a nationwide Social Security Disability Firm that has decades of experience helping clients with their Social Security Disability Insurance (SSD or SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) cases. Both of these programs, offered through the Social Security Administration (SSA), offer monthly financial benefits to people who have been or expect to be, out of work for at least 12 months. SSDI is like an insurance policy in that it provides benefits to those individuals who have worked and paid into the Social Security Administration through payroll deductions (FICA) but later develop a qualifying disability. Supplemental Security Income is a program awarded to disabled claimants based on financial need, with no requirements for having paid into FICA taxes. With our help, you can receive the payments you are entitled to.

How Do I Qualify For Benefits?
SSI vs. SSDI
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a federal income supplement program. SSI pays benefits to disabled individuals who have limited income and resources. SSI focuses on a disabled person’s financial need for qualification, and there are strict limits to the means an applicant can have.
Qualifying for Social Security Disability benefits means meeting both technical and medical eligibility requirements set by the Social Security Administration (SSA). At Nyman Turkish, our experienced Social Security Disability attorneys work with you to determine which federal program(s) you may qualify for—Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), or both.
If a person meets the general requirements for one or both of these programs, they then have to prove that they have been or expect to be out of work for at least 12 months and making less than what the SSA calls Substantial Gainful Activity due to a medical disability.
Technical Eligibility
To qualify for SSDI, you must have paid into Social Security through FICA taxes and earned enough work credits. Generally, you must have worked full-time for at least five of the last 10 years, but the exact determination of these credits can be more complex.
SSI, on the other hand, is a federal income supplement program and is based strictly on financial need. You must have limited income and assets to be eligible. SSI focuses on a disabled person’s financial need for qualification, and there are strict limits to the income and resources an applicant can have.
Our team can evaluate both types of eligibility within minutes during your free consultation.
Medical Eligibility
Regardless of which program you apply for, you must meet the SSA’s definition of disability. Your condition must be severe enough to prevent you from working and must be expected to last at least 12 months or result in death. The SSA measures this against Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA)—a monthly income threshold that, in 2025, is $1620 for non-blind individuals and $2700 for statutorily blind individuals.
The SSA believes that if a person is able to earn an income at or above SGA, then they do not need Social Security Disability benefits in order to maintain their lifestyle.
Key Differences Between SSDI and SSI:
- SSDI is for individuals who have a strong work history and have paid into the Social Security system.
- SSI is for people with little or no income or assets, regardless of their work history.
You may qualify for both programs, and our disability team can quickly determine that for you.
