Social Security Changes for 2025

November 22, 2024 General

2025 COLA Adjustment

As 2024 comes to a close, you may be wondering what changes are coming to Social Security in 2025?

What is COLA for 2025?

In October, the Social Security Administration (SSA) raised the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) by 2.5% for 2025. COLA is reexamined each year to keep up with inflation. This adjustment will affect those receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI.)

The annual COLA adjustment is crucial for those receiving benefits, as the prices of groceries and gas have risen. COLA ensures that individuals who rely on benefits are properly accommodated and can keep pace with inflation.

COLA is measured and determined by The Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W.) For comparison, COLA was 5.9% in 2022, 8.7% in 2023, and 3.2% in 2024. While inflation has been an issue over the last couple of years, driven in part by the COVID-19 pandemic, the numbers have cooled in recent months, resulting in a smaller percentage.

How will I be notified?

Beneficiaries can expect an increase in their benefits starting on December 31, 2024. You will be notified of this change in December of this year, either by mail or through messages in your personal Social Security account. A new, detailed table outlining the COLA adjustment and its impact on your benefits will be provided. The design will be more user-friendly, making it easier to locate specific dates and figures.
