Social Security Administration Structural Changes- What You Need to Know

March 11, 2025 General

The Social Security Administration (SSA) recently announced that it will undergo organizational restructuring, including cutting 7,000 employees—roughly 12% of its staff. The SSA is a federal agency that oversees Social Security benefits. This restructuring is part of the new administrator’s executive orders and the implementation of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which aims to create more efficient and streamlined processes within federal agencies. While this may cause uncertainty and raise questions, many senators, legislators, and attorneys are advocating against this policy.

Keep In Mind

The SSA has never missed a payment.  Social Security is known as one of the most successful government agencies ever created. It provides benefits not only to retirees but also to survivors and disabled individuals.

In 80 years, despite government shutdowns and freezes, Social Security beneficiaries have never gone without their monthly payments. While there is no need to panic, longer wait times for new claim decisions could occur. However, current beneficiaries don’t need to be as concerned. Most payments are automated, and experts say this system will not be disrupted. Despite President Trump’s assurances that Social Security would remain unaffected, the recent announcement of workforce reductions within the SSA have raised concerns about potential impacts on benefit distribution.

Former SSA Commissioner Martin O’Malley suggests that those receiving benefits from the SSA should consider adding savings money to their bank accounts as a precaution.
